How to Choose a Contractor for Gutter Installation

Rain gutters serve an important function of your home. While they arent the most important cosmetically appealing part of your house, they direct rainwater to an area of your property that wont cause damage. Gutters cause run-off to flow away from patios and walkways and protect the siding and windows of your home from water damage.

Homeowners that have a basement that floods on a regular basis can benefit from the installation of a gutter system. Also known as eaves trough or guttering systems, rain gutters come in a variety of sizes and materials, depending on the individual needs of the homeowner.

Most gutters come in either a half moon shape, or U style, or a K style, which is shaped like the letter K. Gutters are usually sized between 4-6 in diameter, with 5 being the most common.

Half moon shaped gutters usually are clogged less frequently and have the least chance of corroding because of their smooth shapes. However, the inner space on this type of gutter is fairly small and cant accommodate large volumes of water. K gutters are more spacious and work better on modern homes. They are made of thinner material and are easier to manipulate.

Most rain gutters are made from seamless aluminum, copper or a form of galvanized steel, depending on the home and the gutter contractor installing the system. Rain gutters must be cleaned twice annually, by scooping out loose debris and leaves. Then, take a hose and applying high pressure allow water to cleanse the system, taking note of any leaks or sagging of the gutter along the way.

Building codes also play a role in the choice of rain gutters for the home, as many historical homes are required to have a 6 half-round shaped gutter. In some regions, the type of materials is also stipulated in the local building codes.

When its time to undertake the process of hiring a gutter contractor, there are some important factors to consider. To find some reputable names, ask around. Word of mouth can be a reliable way to find a good gutter contractor. When you narrow the list down to a few companies and/or individuals, start by getting references of previous work theyve done on area homes. Ask if there are pictures, you can view or if you can actually view the properties in person. Find out if the company is a member of the Better Business Bureau or any professional associations. The company and/or individual should be properly licensed and experience in installing and repairing gutter systems of all types. Ask for a free consultation to get an idea of the type of system the company is suggesting for your home. Find out if a warranty is offered and the stipulations attached to it.

Following these tips and understanding the importance of rain gutters can help preserve the exterior of your home for years to come.
