An Introduction To Interior Painting | Interior Painting Contractors

A common home improvement project is painting the interior of the home. Interior home painting is the one of the easiest ways to improve the look of your home with relative ease. There are diverse varieties of colors from which to choose and once you hire the right professional, the result can be magnificent. In fact, some experts say that the return on investment for re-painting the interior of a home can be as high as 300%! Moreover, your home will continue to look fantastic and once you are ready to sell it, you will likely reap great rewards in terms of profit.

There are steps that must be taken in order to prep the interior of your home to be painted. Proper preparation is key because if you make mistakes or do not hire the right person for the job, you may end up spending much more than you bargained for to fix a botched paint job. So take your time and prep your home so the job can be done right, the first time around.

The first step is to hire a professional, licensed painter to complete the job. A reputable painter will come with their own set of supplies and should be well-versed in the art of interior painting. Some homeowners still opt to do the job themselves, however, so either way, it is important to be armed with knowledge and fully prepared for the job.

To start, you will need certain tools. They include:

* Paint applicators: Most people use large rollers to paint interior walls and then smaller brushes for touch up. The smaller brushes need to be angled to do the baseboards and then a straightedge brush to paint around windows and trim. In fact, you might consider purchasing a trim edger that looks like a sponge with wheels that allows you to glide easily around the trim of the room, leaving a neat strip of paint. A paint pan is also a necessity have a place to pour the paint you are using at the time and a screen to help squeeze off any excess paint.

* Paint: Dont be cheap when purchasing paint and remember, you get what you pay for. If you want a top-quality, elegant-looking paint job, then you need to invest in a quality paint brand. One gallon of paint should cover about 400 sq ft of space and in most instances; you will need to apply two coats. You will also need a primer to cover any darker coats of paint already on the wall. Latex paint is best for interior jobs because it is easy to clean and comes in both flat and glossy (high and low) varieties. A nice contrast when painting interior walls is to use a glossy trim and a flat paint for the wall. Oil-based paints are best for rooms that are usually humid as they have an enamel finish to them.

Additional items: Additional tools you may need when painting include a pry bar (to open the paint), a paint stirrer, a mask (so you dont inhale the fumes), sponges, drop cloth, old clothes (something you dont mind getting paint splotches on) and a household cleaner.

To prep a room for painting, move everything away from the walls. It is preferable to take as many things out of the room as possible; however, you can put everything in the middle of the room and then cover with a drop cloth. Be sure remove light switch covers, pictures and anything else that hangs on the wall. Take off hinges and other forms of hardware and if you plan to coat the ceiling, remove light fixtures. Next, clean the floor and cover it with a drop cloth to avoid damage from the paint. Turn on a ceiling fan or crack a window to allow for ventilation and keep kids or pets out of the room while you are in the process of painting.

You also have to be sure to tape around the edge of the room to ensure paint stays in place. You might also consider taping over electrical outlets to ensure safety. Many people opt to tape along the edge of the ceiling to ensure that sloppy splotches of paint do not get on the ceiling area, making the job look messy or uneven.

Be sure to clean the walls before painting them to remove dust, dirt and the film that accumulate over time. These kinds of obstacles could prevent you from getting an even coat on your walls. You can use one of the household cleaners in your home to clean the wall; just rinse well when you are finished. Remember, paint will not cover cracks or holes, so you may need spackle to fill in these gaps.

While some homeowners opt to take on this job themselves, it really is best to hire a painting contractor. This can be challenging when looking for someone professional and reputable. You can start by getting quotes from painters listed in your local Yellow Pages or online. You should ask around, getting quotes from different companies and/or individuals until you find a quote you are happy with, financially speaking.

Professional painters are hiring most often for interior jobs. When it comes to a painting contract, professionals should be prepared to handle just about any scenario. After all, every home is different and one never knows what they will encounter when they accept a job. This is why once you hire a contractor, they should come by and take a look at the space in which they will be painting to determine the exact materials needed ahead of time to be sure they come prepared when the job begins.

Nationally, many interior painters charge around $700 for smaller painting projects and between $1000-$5000 for multiple rooms and generally larger projects.

Before you hire a painting contractor, get references and sign a contract before the job begins to ensure you both have an understanding of exactly is expected before the job begins.
